Hearing Rings and a Downwind Smell Cone

An awareness sketch for white-tailed deer — hearing range rings and a downwind smell cone on a Virginia woods edge. Model knobs, not measured field distances.

A static map for playing with how far a deer might hear or smell you, on a real Virginia field–woods edge near Thornton Gap / Panorama (Skyline Drive corridor).

Try the browser preview. Drag the “you” pin. Toggle hearing presets. Wind for the smell cone comes from the same Open-Meteo surface feed Windmaster uses; you can still override it by hand.

What the overlays are. The orange hearing ring is an estimated distance a deer might hear that noise under ASSUMED thresholds — not a field trial; size follows the preset. The blue smell cone is a downwind scent plume: direction from wind FROM, range a model knob (ASSUMED), not measured. Live Open-Meteo winds aim the cone; if the fetch fails it falls back to ASSUMED defaults. The preview’s labeled still is meant to be readable on a phone without the math.

This is a model, not magic. Hearing radii are derived from Heffner & Heffner (2010) thresholds plus assumed source levels. Smell geometry stays ASSUMED — live weather only aims the cone. Every knob is labeled.

Optional later: the same geometry as an ATAK overlay. Not hunting tactics beyond awareness rings.
