DitCipher
DitCipher
Send Morse, listen for Morse, and encrypt a message first if you want. For iPhone.
DitCipher is an iPhone app by Marshall Tyler Frith. Version 1.1 has two tabs: Send and Listen.
Listen is built into DitCipher. The standalone Morse Listen app is retired and was never released, so there is nothing else to download.
This page is the App Store Support landing for DitCipher. The project write-up stays at the Morse project page.
Send
- Type a short message. The dit-dah pattern shows as you type, with the letters read back underneath.
- Send it as a 700 Hz tone, the camera light, vibration, or any mix. At least one stays on.
- Speeds are 5, 8, 12, 15 and 20 words per minute.
- Type a dit-dah pattern and read the letters.
- Export packet writes a sound file (WAV) and/or a timing file, and you keep or share it from the share sheet. The app does not upload anything.
- Open timing JSON opens a timing file and replays it on the outputs you have on.
Listen
- Hold the phone near a speaker playing Morse. Listen finds the tone, works out the speed, and writes the letters as they arrive.
- The microphone is only on while Listen is on. Audio is read in memory and isn't recorded or saved.
- No speaker? Try the live demo or the two sample recordings.
Optional passphrase encryption
- DitCipher has optional passphrase encryption using Apple's built-in AES-GCM.
- Turn on Encrypt with passphrase in Send. The message goes out as a line starting with ENC, in letter groups with a check letter each.
- The person listening enters the same passphrase in Listen to read it. If a group is garbled, Listen tells you which one.
- One passphrase covers Send and Listen. It stays in memory for this launch and is never saved. You agree on it with the other person yourself.
- Encrypted messages are limited to 80 characters and take longer to send.
Permissions
- Camera: only to blink the camera light. No photos, no video, and no reading Morse from the camera. If you say no, Camera light turns off and sound and vibration still work.
- Microphone: only for Listen. If you say no, the demo and samples still work.
You can change either one later in Settings › DitCipher.
Troubleshooting
- Listen isn't picking anything up: turn the speaker up, move the phone closer, and cut down room noise. Give it a few letters to work out the speed.
- “Couldn't decrypt: wrong passphrase or garbled groups”: check that both sides typed exactly the same passphrase (it is case-sensitive), then resend in a quieter room or at a slower speed.
- The light doesn't flash: allow the camera in Settings › DitCipher.
Requirements
- iPhone with iOS 18 or later
- No account and no network connection
Privacy
