DitCipher — Privacy Policy

No account, sign-in, ads, or analytics. The microphone is used only while Listen is on, the flashlight only to flash outgoing Morse, and an optional passphrase stays in memory. Nothing leaves your iPhone unless you share it. We do not sell personal information.

DitCipher (“the App”) is an iPhone app published by Marshall Tyler Frith. This policy explains what information the App uses. From version 1.1 the App has two tabs: Send, and Listen. The Listen tab replaces the standalone Morse Listen app.

Summary

  • No account, sign-in, ads, analytics, or tracking.
  • The microphone is used only while Listen is on, to decode Morse audio on the iPhone. No audio is recorded, saved, or sent anywhere.
  • The camera permission is used only to flash the flashlight for outgoing Morse. The App does not take photos or video and does not read Morse from the camera.
  • Optional passphrase encryption runs on the iPhone. The passphrase is kept in memory only. It is never stored, never logged, and never sent.
  • The App makes no network requests and collects nothing.
  • Sound, vibration, messages, and the files you export stay on your iPhone unless you share them yourself from the system share sheet.
  • We do not sell personal information.

Information the App uses

Microphone (Listen). If you turn Listen on and grant Microphone permission, the App reads sound from the microphone to find a Morse tone and turn it into letters. That audio is processed in memory on the iPhone. It is not recorded, not saved to a file, and not sent anywhere. The microphone is used only while Listen is on, and listening stops when you turn it off or leave the App. You can deny the microphone and still use the live demo and the two bundled recordings.

Decoded letters. Decoded text stays in the App until you clear it or the App quits. You can select it and copy it. The App does not keep an account, a history file, or a cloud copy. While a tone locks, the App can write a short diagnostic line on the iPhone with the tone frequency, a time, and a score. That line does not include the letters, and it is not sent to Marshall Frith or to anyone else.

Camera, flashlight only (Send). If Camera light is on, the App asks for camera access so it can blink the flashlight in time with your outgoing Morse message. That permission drives the flashlight and nothing else. The App does not open a camera preview, take a photo, record video, or receive Morse by light or camera. Nothing from the camera is saved or uploaded. If you deny access, Camera light turns off and you can still use sound and vibration. You can change this later in Settings, under DitCipher.

Sound. The App generates a 700 Hz tone on the iPhone and plays it. Sending does not record what the speaker plays.

Vibration. The same on and off pattern can play through the iPhone’s haptics. That stays on the iPhone.

Optional passphrase encryption. If you turn encryption on and enter a passphrase, the App encrypts your message on the iPhone before it is sent, and Listen can decrypt a received message with the same passphrase. Encryption uses Apple’s on-device cryptography: a key is derived from the passphrase with PBKDF2-SHA256, and the message is sealed with AES-256-GCM. The passphrase is kept in memory only while the App is open. It is never stored (not in the Keychain and not in the App’s settings), never logged, and never sent. You share it with the other person yourself, outside the App. The App does not offer to save it to the Passwords app.

Text you type. Your message, the dit-dah pattern and your passphrase stay in the App's memory while it is open. The App does not save a log or history of what you send. Files are written only when you tap Export packet (see below).

Files you export or open. Export can write a sound file, a timing file, or both, in the App’s documents folder, then open the share sheet. The App does not upload those files. A file leaves the iPhone only if you pick an action in that sheet. Open timing JSON reads a file you choose and plays it on the outputs you have switched on. That file is read on the iPhone.

What we do not collect

  • No user accounts or profiles.
  • No advertising identifiers and no tracking.
  • No third-party analytics or crash SDKs.
  • No location, contacts, photos, or Bluetooth access. The microphone is used only as described above.
  • No network requests. The App does not contact a server. There is no DitCipher backend. The Privacy Policy link in the App opens the policy on marshallfrith.com in Safari.
  • No sale or share of personal information.

Permissions the App asks for

iOS shows these exact words when the App first asks for each permission:

  • Microphone (NSMicrophoneUsageDescription): “DitCipher uses the microphone to listen for Morse and turn it into letters. Audio stays on the phone and is not recorded.”
  • Camera, for the flashlight (NSCameraUsageDescription): “DitCipher flashes the camera torch as a Morse lamp. It does not take photos or video.”

Network endpoints the App contacts

None. The App does not contact any server or network endpoint and opens no network connections. The only web address in the App is its privacy policy on marshallfrith.com, which opens in Safari, outside the App, when you tap Privacy Policy. The button that takes you to Settings uses the system Settings link and does not go over the network.

The App’s privacy manifest declares no tracking, no tracking domains, and no collected data types.

This website

This policy covers the App. The marshallfrith.com pages, including this one, use cookieless visit counting that does not identify you, and security checks that protect the site and its forms from bots. See the site privacy notice. The App itself contains no analytics.

Children

The App is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes

We may update this policy. The effective date above will change when we do. Version 1.1 describes DitCipher 1.1 for iPhone: the Listen tab and its use of the microphone, which replaces the standalone Morse Listen app, and optional passphrase encryption. Continued use after an update means you accept the revised policy.
