TileMarshal for iPhone and iPad
Support
Turn a GeoTIFF into an offline MBTiles map on your phone, then share it to ATAK or iTAK.
Get help
Send a question, a bug report or a file that won't convert through the contact form. Messages reach Marshall Frith directly. Please include:
- your iPhone or iPad model and iOS version (Settings › General › About);
- the TileMarshal version (shown in the app's About screen, for example "Version 1.0 (1)");
- what the app said, word for word, or a screenshot;
- the GeoTIFF's size, and where it came from, if you can share that.
How it works
- Tap Choose GeoTIFF and pick a file in Files. It is read where it is, not copied.
- Check the info card: size, bands, projection, native zoom.
- Pick a zoom range. The maximum can't go above the file's native detail.
- Read the estimate: tile count, output size, and a green, amber or red label that says whether this phone can do it comfortably.
- Tap Convert. Keep the app open until it finishes; Cancel stops it cleanly.
- Tap Share to send the
.mbtilesfile to ATAK, iTAK or another app. The file is also in Files › On My iPhone (or iPad) › TileMarshal.
What it reads
- Classic TIFF and BigTIFF, in strips or tiles.
- 8-bit images with 1–4 bands (grey, grey + alpha, RGB, RGBA).
- No compression, LZW, Deflate or PackBits.
- EPSG:3857 Web Mercator or EPSG:4326 WGS 84, north-up.
- Nodata becomes transparent.
The in-app What this version supports sheet has the full list.
Common messages
- "Projection … isn't supported on iPhone yet." The phone has no reprojection yet. Reproject the file to EPSG:3857 or 4326 on a computer first.
- "TIFF compression … isn't supported yet" (JPEG, WebP, ZSTD and others). Re-save the GeoTIFF with Deflate or LZW.
- "16-bit samples aren't supported yet." Elevation and scientific rasters need a colour stretch the phone doesn't do yet. Export an 8-bit RGB version first.
- "… very wide strips" or "… very large tiles". The file is stored in blocks too big to read on a phone. Re-save it as a tiled GeoTIFF (for example 256 × 256 or 512 × 512 internal tiles), or convert it on a Mac.
- Red label, "over the phone limit". Lower the max zoom. Each zoom level roughly quadruples the tile count.
- Not enough free space. Free up space on the device, or pick a lower max zoom.
