Ship Finder
Compares public Sentinel-1 radar detections with AIS positions you record or import. A match is a candidate, not an identification. No account, ads, or analytics.
Ship Finder is an iPhone app that compares public Sentinel-1 radar detections with AIS positions you record or import. A match is a candidate, not an identification.
This page is the App Store Support landing for Ship Finder. The browser tool at /ship-finder/ is a separate preview.
What it does
- Draw a box over water, or pick a preset strait, set a date range, and find Sentinel-1 scenes in the public Microsoft Planetary Computer catalogue.
- Find bright returns in the radar image and see an estimated length and a confidence for each one.
- Compare those detections with AIS positions: a bundled recording, a CSV you import, or a live aisstream.io watch with your own key. A detection with no AIS position nearby in the stored window is labelled “unmatched detection (no AIS within window)”. That is a data gap, not an identification.
- Filter by length and select by confidence, then export GeoJSON, KML, or KMZ on the phone.
- Build a card tour from the detections you pick, and read a plain-language note on how radar returns work.
Requirements
- iPhone
- Internet connection for scene search and the radar image
- No account. An aisstream.io key is optional and only used for Watch area.
Privacy
Privacy Policy — no account, no ads, no analytics SDK, no Ship Finder servers. AIS positions and exports stay on the phone unless you share them.
