Scope: Light recreational drop gear (streamers, soft markers). No weapons, no hazardous materials. Follow local airspace and hobby rules.
Materials
- Hobby quad with a spare PWM / AUX channel on a COTS flight controller
- 9g micro servo + 3D-printed or laser-cut release latch
- Light soft payload with a simple loop (ribbon, foam marker)
- Transmitter switch mapped to that AUX channel
Steps (outline)
- Design a fail-safe latch: closed when unpowered / mid-throw; opens only on commanded PWM.
- Mount servo on a hardpoint under CG; keep payload well under aircraft limits.
- Map a momentary switch on the radio to the AUX channel; confirm travel on the bench with props off.
- Range-check release on the ground; then a low hover test over a clear area.
- Log channel endpoints in the build notes so the next person doesn’t reverse the servo.
Tips
- Prefer soft payloads until the mechanism is boringly reliable.
- Document CG with and without payload.
- Future: ATAK marker at release point via a companion app — out of scope for this outline.
