Not flight-ready. This is a parts-category and safety outline for a hobby / recreational servo release concept (e.g. streamer, soft goods, camera lens cap). It is not a flight manual, not certified, and not for weapons or hazardous payloads. Follow local aviation rules and manufacturer limits.
High-level controller concept: a spare PWM / GPIO channel triggers a COTS servo that opens a simple mechanical latch. Think categories and checklists — not a wiring diagram you should fly tomorrow.
Materials (categories)
Airframe / FC: hobby multirotor or fixed-wing with a free PWM/servo channel on a COTS flight controller (or a small MCU if bench-testing only)
Actuator: metal-gear micro servo sized for the latch load — not for heavy or sharp objects
Latch / mount: 3D-printed or COTS release bracket; soft payload bag or streamer only for early tests
Power: regulated 5 V (or servo-rated) supply; avoid starving the flight controller BEC
Radio: transmitter switch or flight-mode channel mapped to the release channel
Define the payload class. Soft, light, non-hazardous only for this sketch. Write a max mass and a “what happens if it hangs” plan.
Pick the channel. Reserve one RC channel for release. Document open vs closed pulse widths (e.g. 1000 µs closed / 2000 µs open) on paper before touching the aircraft.
Bench the servo. On the desk with a servo tester: verify travel, direction, and that the latch fully opens under expected tension. No props spinning.
Mechanical mock-up. Mount latch on a scrap plate. Cycle 50 times. Check for binding, screw creep, and partial opens.
Power budget. Confirm the BEC/regulator can handle servo stall current without browning out the FC. Add a dedicated regulator if unsure.
Ground “drop” over soft catch. If you ever progress past outline, do tethered/ground tests only with props removed or aircraft secured — still not a flight endorsement.
Stop and review. Airworthiness, waivers, and local law are out of scope here. Do not treat this page as permission to fly a release.
Notes / gotchas
Fail-safe closed. On RX loss, the latch must not open. Test that explicitly.
Servo chatter in flight can walk a latch open — use adequate deadband and mechanical over-center if the design needs it.
CG and drag change when the payload leaves. Plan center-of-gravity with and without mass.
No explosive, incendiary, sharp, or otherwise weaponized payloads — out of scope and not welcome in this sketch.
Label the switch on the radio so nobody “discovers” release in flight by accident.
